From the beginning
Opening a school is a lot of work. Trust me, I’ve met every challenge and success you can think of.
Over the last decade I have been an active collaborative leader in successfully opening multiple charter schools in my community. Not only that, I have helped numerous other charter schools across the country in the founding of their own organizations and involvement in self-study.
Each step…
People are always taken back when they hear my story.
A mother of two committed to starting a school for my children and my small rural community because a schooling alternative did not yet exist here. My background was not in education, but I wouldn’t let that stand in my way.
How did I do it?
I pulled from what I had learned thus far. I had majored in Women’s Studies which inspired perseverance. My research on non-profits/grassroots development told narratives of grit when it was time to start something new. My minor in dance gave me the flexible spirit to traverse the unknown path I was embarking.
First and foremost…
I dug in to what I could handle on my own, built trust with my team and asked for help where I could find it. Through the process I was most eager to share what I was learning with my colleagues, design team members, school district administration and board (none of which knew how to authorize a charter school), as well as the community I was to share the dream with.
